Retraining as a teacher in your forties — is it worth it, and what's it really like?

You've had a career. You're forty-two, or fifty-one, and teaching keeps coming back as the thing you should have done. About 23,000 people started postgraduate teacher training in England in 2024/25, and nearly half were over twenty-five. The Department for Education's Get Into Teaching service will give you an adviser; Now Teach exists for exactly your situation.

What the official routes are less good at is the question you are actually asking, which is not 'how do I apply' but 'is this a mistake'. The forums answer that one every week — it is one of the most-asked career questions on Mumsnet — but the answers are from people in the middle of it, rarely from people three years out, and almost never from the ones who left.

What people ask

What no search can return

The honest version of this question needs several people: someone who did it and stayed, someone who did it and left, and someone who decided against it. No single thread gives you all three, and no official page can, because its job is recruitment. The attestation from the ones who left within two years is the part that is almost never heard.
