Moving back to the UK after years abroad — and back to the town you left

You've been away ten years, or twenty. A parent is getting older, a job has come up, the children are reaching school age, or you've simply had enough of being foreign. Around 110,000 British nationals returned to the UK in 2025 and about 140,000 the year before. Almost all of them discovered that coming home is a move abroad in reverse, with the added difficulty that nobody treats it as one.

The practical side is well documented: tax residence, National Insurance, GP registration, the council factsheets about proving you are habitually resident. The part that isn't documented is what it feels like in the second year, when the novelty has gone and the people you knew have carried on without you.

What people ask

What no search can return

The forums are full of people asking these questions and a few answering, usually in the first month of being back, when everything is still strange. What is rare is the view from three years in: who settled, who left again, and what made the difference. The town you left is a different question again, and only someone who went back to theirs can tell you what it was like.
