Open question · First in family to university
Does it matter that your parents can't help you choose a course?
Nobody has answered this yet. It is kept here because the question itself is rarely written down, and a question that is written down can at least be found.
Why nothing on the web answers it
The question is asked on The Student Room most months, usually by someone at sixteen, and answered by people at eighteen. The useful answer comes from someone who chose at seventeen with no help, finished, and knows now whether the choice was the right one and what they would have asked if there had been anyone to ask.
Who could
Anyone who picked a course with no one at home who could advise, and anyone — teacher, adviser, older sibling — who has helped someone else do it.
What they would be asked
- How did you actually choose?
- What did you get wrong, and did it matter?
- Who, if anyone, helped?
- What question should someone in that position be asking that they never think to?
