Open question · Who lived here
What was it like living on a council estate in the 1970s — from someone who did?
Nobody has answered this yet. It is kept here because the question itself is rarely written down, and a question that is written down can at least be found.
Why nothing on the web answers it
There are photographs, documentaries and academic histories. There are council heritage pages. What is missing is the daily texture — who looked after whose children, what the rent man was like, what you could and couldn't do — from someone who lived it and is still here to be asked. The estates are still there; the people who remember them new are not going to be for long.
Who could
Anyone who grew up on, or raised a family on, a council estate in the 1970s, anywhere in Britain.
What they would be asked
- What did people on the estate do for each other that nobody wrote down?
- What changed first, and when?
- What do people get wrong about it now?
- What would you want someone who lives there today to know?
There is no form on this page and no one to write to. If you are one of the people who could answer, the situation page says where people like you already gather. About this site.
